Black currawongs

61×46 cm acrylics on birch panel 2016 Private collection GLOVER PRIZE FINALIST 2017

In May of 2016, through the window of the small cottage I was renting at Woodbridge, Tasmania, I saw Black Angus cattle grazing on the hillside opposite as usual, but the small paddock behind the cottage was covered with black currawongs. The black birds were spaced apart exactly like the black cattle, all were busy foraging, and I loved that perspective made the currawongs larger than the cattle.

This painting was a finalist in the 2017 Glover Prize for best representation of the Tasmanian landscape.
