Under the light fantastic

152cmx101cm acrylic on cotton canvas 2021 Private collection

Every once in a while, on an overcast day, when you look across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in southern Tasmania to Bruny Island, the water and clouds and sun are doing exactly the right thing so that there are no glittering reflections spread across the surface but only one thin slash of spotlight on the far side.

When you go for a dip on this side of the Channel you stagger across stones a little way before reaching the sandy bottom and trying to get yourself to submerge in the cold water. Stepping into the Channel is a powerful experience.

I love Bruny Island’s first name, Lunawanna-alonnah. It ripples.
